This two-to-three day activity for grades 7-9 is an extension activity that goes with "Learning Genetics with Paper Pets", an NSTA Science Scope article written by the same author (Maine Coon Educational Publications). Paper Pets are used in an activity that models selective breeding to produce offspring with desired genetic traits. Students apply their knowledge of genotypes, phenotypes, probability, Punnett squares, and sexual reproduction to create companies that breed and sell Paper Pet Pets with particular traits. Common Core Writing Standards for Science and Technical Subjects are included as students are asked to create a newspaper or magazine advertisement for their Paper Pet breed.
