The ability to understand and communicate what you need is a skill that we all need. It's especially important for students to learn this skill as their lives are changing and they need to be able to help themselves through it. It is also important that they are aware of their rights as students with disabilities.
I use this workbook in a mini unit when we are discussing self-advocacy in the workplace. It serves as a way to prepare students for the process of asking for workplace accommodations, should they choose to make this decision. It starts off with a fun opener about famous people with disabilities, then prompts the students to think about their understanding of a disability and also what their strengths are. Then we review the vocabulary and the laws surrounding workplace accommodations. Lastly, this workbook includes scaffolding and a template for asking for workplace accommodations, and students craft a formal letter for practice.
