One of the hardest criteria's to fulfill as a teacher with new Common Core Standards is having student's self-assess themselves without taking too much time away from instruction. The self-assessment sticks are a great way to incorporate student self-assessment throughout a lesson without taking time away from the lesson you are trying to complete. When you buy these self-assessment sticks, print them double-sided on white paper, laminate, hole punch at the circle mark, and then place onto a book ring. I personally love to hang them from the side of my students' desks, so they are constantly self-assessing how well they are doing throughout every lesson. It also benefits the students who are shy and not willing to raise their hand when they are unsure about a task. Many of my shy students place a yellow stick pointing towards them on their desk when they have a question, and they feel more comfortable knowing they did not have to feel embarrassed, while still getting the academic support they need.
