This stepladder rubric is a great tool for students to use to self-assess their own use of textual evidence in a written response. This rubric will also help students frame their thinking around ways to improve their writing using the “steps” on the rubric.
This rubric works from right to left. Students must meet the requirement in the “Limited Progress” box to move on to the “In Progress box.” Students can continue through the four-step ladder this way.
The fifth graders I used this rubric with loved the stepladder process and each student found at least one aspect of their writing on which they could improve.
