Get to know your students' strengths and weaknesses by doing quick self-assessments in class or as a homework task. Students grade themselves on a scale os 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100%, depending on how capable they are feeling about each skill.
This makes a great first-day-of-class activity, and can be done as part of a communication activity, where students compare their checklists and give honest and supportive feedback.
