Many classteachers now encourage the children in their classes to assess their own work - have they achieved the WALT (We are learning to...), WILF (What I'm looking for... ) or lesson objective? Are they happy with their work, or could they do better? The following 'smiley faces' are for classroom display and help reinforce the need to self assess. At the end of each lesson, the children can stamp (or draw) a face and then add the mouth. If they are happy with their work they add a smile; if they aren't sure they add a straight line; and if they feel they need more help they can add a wiggly line. This may initially need a 'circle time' to introduce the faces and, from experience, everyone will initially always draw smiles for every lesson. However, this should settle down and quickly become an integral part of each lesson plenary.
If you visit my website www.the-treasure-box.co.uk I sell pre-inked, self assessment stampers that children can use to self assess each piece of work they complete.
