In the midst of the business and difficulties of life, we all must be willing and able to take the time to take care of ourselves. There are few people who truly stop and nourish themselves enough, and this leads to people trying to pour into other people, into school, or into their jobs from an empty place.
What is self-care?
Self-care is taking the time to nurture and care for yourself. When we practice self-care, we are declaring to ourselves and to others that we are worth investing in.
Self-care is a compassionate approach to how we treat ourselves. In order to practice self-care, we must treat ourselves well and focus on the needs that we have in order to better help those around us.
Who can use this self-care journal?
This journal is designed for use by anyone who is serious about investing in themselves and in others around them:
Teachers can use this for their own self-care throughout the school year, or in the summer as a way to unwind from the year and refuel.
Teachers or counselors can use this journal to teach their students about self-care. They can invest in their kids by helping them invest in themselves.
Therapists or social workers can use this as a tool to talk about self-care with vulnerable populations, especially kids who have had to take on more responsibility than they should have and who are burdened by their circumstances.
Principals and other administrators can use this for themselves, or to work with teachers on how to take care of themselves in order to better take care of their students.
How does this journal promote self-care?
Coloring is a technique shown to reduce stress, which is a critical component of self-care. The coloring pages included in this journal have the added benefit of having quotes that inspire self-care.
Journaling is a positive way to explore self-care ideas. Journal prompts included give you time and space to think about important self-care and self-love topics.
Exploring your emotions and self-care through drawing/sketching/painting/etc. has the added benefit of reducing stress and encouraging self-expression. Just being creative can be a great form of self-care. The sketching prompts can be discussion starters for counselors or teachers to use with students, or a form of release for teachers or other educational professionals. We all need space to explore our emotions and to be creative!
Use the list of self-care activities to enhance your self-care routines! Draw one of the cards from a box whenever you need some self-care inspiration.
Whoever you are and whatever it is you are looking to do, I hope that you can find some help and healing through the use of this journal.
