Social-Emotional Learning is more important than ever and having quality lesson plans and activities makes it so much easier to build into your curriculum. These units were developed to support YOU in teaching, modeling and reinforcing great character. This resource focuses on SELF-CONTROL and is part of a year-long social-emotional curriculum. This resource can be used as a stand-alone resource or in conjunction with the other units.
In this packet, you will find 4 detailed lesson plans as well as printable and digital activities. Each lesson plan comes with specific teacher language so they are ideal for families, sub plans and teachers. These lessons were created for whole group but could absolutely be used in a small group or homeschool setting. Instead of class discussions, you would just have a discussion with the child. They could easily be adapted for a class meeting over a digital platform, as well.
This packet includes many activities and lessons to teach your students about showing self-control in many different situations.
Lesson 1- What is Self Control?
Your class will discuss what it means to have self-control by doing a simple "waiting" activity. Then you'll make an anchor chart of the chant "Stop-Think-Act" as a quick way to remember to have self-control. You'll teach your students to say this to themselves when they're having a hard time staying in control. Then students will draw and write about having self control.
Lesson 2- What Are Big Emotions?
After reviewing self-control, you will discuss big emotions with your class. You'll work together to play charades and act out various emotions (anger, sadness, jealousy) and then create a chart to help your students identify and name their big emotions. When students are able to explain what they are feeling, it's much easier for them to show self-control. Finally, your students will draw and write about expressing their emotions with and without self-control.
Lesson 3-How Can I Calm Down When I'm Upset?
In this lesson, you will set up a cool down kit with your class and explain it to them. You'll discuss what goes in the cool down kit (like a timer, play-doh, writing pages) and how to use them appropriately. Having a safe place to go and cool down offers our students an opportunity to regain control and helps them self-regulate. I've included many teacher explanation and direction pages so you know exactly how to implement it. The kit includes coloring and journal pages that you can have students fill out to express themselves, as well as suggestions for other items to include. I've also included Cool Down Counters that students can use to actively count and calm down.
Lesson 4-What Does Patience Mean?
Your students will play a fun partner game to practice waiting their turn for increasing periods of time. Then you'll work together to define patience and when we might need to show patience. This is a great lesson to refer back to when students need to be patient, and aren't sure exactly what means. You'll discuss exactly how patience looks and sounds so students know what is expected of them!
