Self Poem Mentor Text Study for High School: The Poetry of Elizabeth Acevedo

This complete lesson guides students through writing their own self-expression poem by drawing inspiration from the writings of Elizabeth Acevedo, author of Poet X. This resource includes a slideshow, writing and analysis handouts, and a suggested lesson plan. This lesson is a great way to introduce some writing from a diverse author, add some creativity to an English curriculum, start the year off with rigor, or a number of other ways.
