To ensure that students are actively reading their self-selected novels, I like to assign mini-projects throughout the year. The Tic-Tac-Toe project allows for each student to work with their self-selected novel as well as giving them the autonomy to select any three assignments in a row on the choice board provided. I also provide my students with the rubric, upfront, so they fully understand the various components being asked of them for each activity on the choice board.
In essence, your students should be able to complete, in class, one activity from the choice board per day, with the fourth day giving them the opportunity to revise and finalize their work for submission.
If you're looking to differentiate your lessons a bit more, as well as hold them accountable for their self-selected readings, the Tic-Tac-Toe project is right up your alley.
Psst...you could also use this activity for any common novels your classes may read throughout the school year. I won't tell anyone.
