Even after a class study on satire, both Horatian and Juvenalian satire and tone can still be difficult to hear. If your students could use some independent study / in or outside of class practice, use this guide. This is prime AP Lang study practice for my students!
The guide offers instructions for annotating for tone and other rhetorical devices. The essays and poems in the "Is It Satire?" Prompts Packet are all suited for AP Lang Rhetorical Analysis practice as well. Not all are satire--students will annotate to decide. The tone words list can be any you find useful; I like the one at Valencia College which separates words into categories (http://valenciacollege.edu/east/academicsuccess/eap/documents/tonewords.pdf), but please use any you wish!
In the "Is It Satire?" teacher annotation packet, students can measure their annotations and conclusions against teacher annotations.
Your students will be more prepared for the AP Lang exam, more adept annotators, and better equipped to recognize and respond to satire when the world puts it in front of them.
