SEMI-COLONS: Let your students discover how to use them properly.
Traditionally, when we want to work on mechanics with our students, we teach them the “rule” then give them worksheets that contain error ridden sentences that they have to correct. This model, however, presents students with multiple sentences that are incorrect, and that is what they get used to seeing. The theory behind mentor sentences is that students may be more apt to learn the rules when they see models of well-written mentor sentences. They also use a process of discovery to discern why the mentor sentences work.
This zip file includes a slide show that will allow you to facilitate your students' discovery as they work together to understand when and how to use semicolons. I have provided corresponding worksheets, or you can use the slides to direct them to write in their notebooks instead. I have also include blank templates for the slide show that will allow you to add your own sentences if you wish.
This product would go well with my Sentence Construction Guidebook
and my Sentence Construction Posters
