Knowing the difference between using a colon or a semicolon is a difficult concept for students to grasp. They will see it many times on the Editing/Revising portion of their ELA STAAR test.
This lesson is designed to provide practice to students to not only learn where grammatical errors are in a sentence, but to also be able to identify if a colon or semicolon should be placed.
This lesson includes 9 "Tweets" from celebrities such as Justin Bieber, Jimmy Fallon, Dancing with the Stars, and The Kid's Choice Awards.
The funny usernames will keep students entertained and the format of a short tweet gives students many practice problems but keeps it light and modern. No one wants to do problems from a boring grammar book!
Students simply read the tweets and write in a semicolon or colon on the tweet!
**ANSWER KEY IS INCLUDED!!**
This was PART ONE of my "Twitter lesson".
This first part, letting them proofread other tweets, helps ease them into the assignment and build confidence. PART TWO requires students to now be the celebrity and write two of their own tweets. This second part became my assessment of who really grasped the concept and could write on their own, versus simply correcting sentences. PART TWO is linked below:
PART TWO-Student Created Tweets practicing Semicolons and Colons
This lesson offers 2 blank tweet boxes for students to now write their OWN tweets, incorporating a semicolon in one tweet and a colon in the other tweet! Perfect for an end of lesson assessment or a next day warm-up!
