I patterned this chant after the story Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?. This chant goes through the process of how a bill becomes a law. Teacher leads the chant by reading the top line. Children answer by reading the second line in the stanza. It is important to allow the children time to familiarize themselves with the pattern and rhythm of the chant first. After that occurrs, you can begin teaching them the concepts imbedded in the chant. You could also take the text and make it into a big book. On this download, you will get the text which you can make individual copies for each of your students. Also, I have attached pictures of how I charted the chant to give you an example in case you would like to make one. You can implement the chant whole group at the carpet, using your chart, or you can have students sitting at their desks, reading from their copies. I found clip art off of Google Images to add to my chart. You can add your own illustrations or just transpose the text using two different colors of markers. I have seen it done both ways. Each way works well! Students can also add illustrations to their copies. The chant incorporates transition words that you can highlight during your core time. These words will be helpful if you decide to have your students create a flow map of how a bill becomes law and then write about it. This chant from Kris' Common Core Crutches will be a wonderful resource for your study on government. It is sure to support and uplift your curriculum!
