This assignment is great for getting students to start to internalize the traits of the the families (groups) of the periodic table, and can be used to help introduce the idea of periodic trends (periodicity). Students create a "senior yearbook page" for either an atom that they have picked, or an atom that you assign them. This assignment works well if you have a science dictionary on hand (with profiles of the properties of each element) or if you let the students use websites such as WebElements to search for properties of their element. Given the actual properties of the element, students then have the task of trying to personify the element. It's a fun assignment to watch the kids do, and the products are always great to put on bulletin boards!
