Discuss with students that authors use sensory details to make their writing come
to life and to engage the reader. Sensory details use sight, touch, sound, smell, and
Read page 3 aloud to students. Chart the sensory details from the page.
Sight- Outside, the lights of towns and villages flickered in the distance as the Polar Express raced northward.
Sound- We sang Christmas carols..
Taste- ...and ate candies with nougat centers as white as snow. We drank hot cocoa as thick and rich as melted chocolate bars.
Divide students into groups of 4. Give each group a Polar Express book and the Sensory Details Hunt sheet. Assign each group one of the five senses. They need to find examples of how the author used that sense in the story.
Have students pick their favorite example and work together to write the example on the Sensory Details Train. Have them decorate and cut out the train.
Each group then needs to present their train car to the class. Tape or glue the Train Cars together to create the Sensory Details Train to hang up in your room.
