I used this packet with first graders to introduce the strategy of making mental pictures while we read to help the story come alive and visualize the action.
On Monday-Wednesday, I played them about 5 minutes of nature sounds and asked them to draw what they heard, picking out the details in the sounds that they drew in our discussion.
On Thursday and Friday, I took it a step further and played contrasting instrumental pieces of music (e.g. Fireworks from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix vs. Dumbledore's Farewell from Half-Blood Prince), asked students to draw what they heard with each, then talked about how our drawings were different and why.
You could easily use this with poems or stories read aloud as well!
