Sensory Stories are stories designed to teach children with sensory overresponsivity to perform some simple actions that will help them get through a particular everyday activity. Each Sensory Story is about one activity that has been commonly found by parents, children, and professionals to create problems in the home, the school, or the community by evoking negative reactions in children.
Each Sensory Story contains sensory strategies that enable the child’s body and brain to perceive the activity more positively. Sensory Stories are based on the belief that all children want to participate in the daily activities of their family and school and that learning to self-implement sensory strategies makes it possible for them to do so. Each story describes the steps of an activity in sequence while highlighting the sensory components of the activity that might present problems for a child.
Sensory strategies are presented to the child to use before, during, and after the activity to eliminate the unpleasant sensory aspects of the event. Line drawings portray the steps and strategies to enhance learning. When the stories are read on a regular basis, the child learns what to expect during the activity and how to take charge of it through the use of self-imposed sensory strategies.
