This is an excellent source to review or refresh your students' knowledge of simple sentences. You can use it to reteach simple sentences at the beginning of the year, to pull small groups for additional lessons, and use the projects for either unit reviews or as extensions for your advanced learners. This packet includes a note page for students on simple sentences, 3 worksheets on sentence diagramming, fragments, and expanding sentences for varied word choice. A quiz follows the worksheets, and answer keys are included.
At the end, there is a project by which you can assess your students' understanding and use of simple sentences in authentic writing. For the project, students will write their own original rhyming poem based on Walt Whitman's poem about Abraham Lincoln "Oh Captain, My Captain" by researching a different famous person and incorporating simple sentences to mimic the rhyme scheme and meter of the original poem. Students also work with technology by submitting their poems to the Scholastic Online Poetry Publisher and organizing their research with Poplet. For assessment, there is a rubric to assess the poems and a rubric to assess technology skills.
These can add to your students' ability to include vivid, descriptive simple sentences in their writing in a grammatically correct format. Check out my store, The Literacy Lounge, for resources for these other parts of speech:
