This Write the Room Activity has students creating sentences by cracking the picture codes. After they have walked around the room and found all of the simple words that make their sentence, they are to illustrate their sentence in the box. My kinders are practicing diagramming sentences by coding the beginning capital letter, ending punctuation, subject, and verb, so they will use their 'stop light' symbols to code their sentences once they have written and illustrated them.
This activity is great for reinforcing student understanding of the 5 main parts of a sentence, as well as providing a quick comprehension activity. The students must correctly illustrate the sentence they created, and this can help you see which students are understanding the meaning of the words used in the sentence as opposed to those which are only able to copy the words down from the posters.
There is a full-color and black and white version of this activity, and I would LOVE to hear how it is used in your classroom!
