Updated 2/28/16 Now editable. Rev up students' enthusiasm for learning to write proper sentences with this fun, hands-on racing activity. Students prepare their race track by building a sentence from scrambled sight words and CVC words. Then they use a toy car, race car game piece or race car pointer (car templates provided) to guide or "drive" their reading of the sentence. They increase their speed and improve their lap times as they work on fluency and sight word recognition. Racing response sheets are provided for students to "record their race data" (write their sentence) and then "tech inspect" it for capitalization, spacing, and punctuation. Comprehension of the sentence is checked with a "photo op" (students draw a picture). Students can race a single track or do a racing season (SCOOT type activity where they travel to different race tracks).
Race experiences such as preparing the track, "hitting their marks" & "following a line" while driving, getting help from their crew chief, pit stops, tech inspections, race seasons & more add excitement to learning. The interactive nature of this activity accelerates students' excitement to learn The racing aspect gives them the desire to improve their reading and writing.
You receive over 100 track word cards (including punctuation - period, question mark, exclamation point) to use to create simple to more complex sentences plus editable cards. You can choose to do short track racing with sentences that have 3-4 words or super speedway racing with more complex sentences containing 5+ words.
Pit Crew Clue Cards/Track Official Cards are provided that have the sentence on them (blank cards are provided for your own sentences). They can be used in 2 ways: Students who need guidance in building their sentence can be given the Pit Crew Clue Card to use as a reference to build their sentence (their crew chief or spotter is guiding them). For students who do not require a visual aide in order to build their sentence, the cards can be used as Track Official answer keys. After they build their track sentence, they check it with the card (the track official is inspecting their track prior to the race).
To help students with beginning a sentence with a capital letter and ending a sentence with punctuation, track word cards with start/finish lines on them are provided. These will give students a visual clue as to which word begins the sentence and which card to use at the end.
Pit stop practice: You can check students' recognition of individual words in the sentence by doing pit stops. Tell them to “pit” on a certain word in the sentence (park their car on the word). This is similar to when cars come down pit road and have to stop at their assigned pit stall. Have students drive down the road and “pit” at the correct word. You may also use this activity to find parts of speech.
Racing response sheets are provided for both short track sentences and super speedway sentences. Places are provided for students to write the sentence, put it through "tech inspection" (check it for capitalization, spacing, punctuation), and draw a picture of the sentence to check comprehension. There is also a racing response sheet for writing multiple sentences. This can be used in several ways. Students can do a racing season (similar to SCOOT) where they travel from desk to desk building, writing, & racing sentences. After the season they conference with you (their crew chief) to discuss their "racing" (which track (sentence) did they like best, which track did they struggle with, where do they want to improve, etc.). After students become proficient in sentence building, supply them with a number of different track words and have them make as many complete sentences as possible and write them on their sheet. For example, supply the following words: I, the, that, like, see, we, car, dog, cat. Example sentences – I like that car. I see the dog. We like the cat. We see the car. I see that dog. etc.
Pocket Chart Practice
The track word cards can also be used with your pocket chart. Students can use a car pointer to read the sentence and complete the race. Race car templates are provided for making simple pointers out of paint stir sticks, dowel rods, craft sticks, etc.
