This resource is designed so that each day, students study a new mentor sentence. Each mentor sentence is accompanied by focus questions to get students thinking about the sentence on a variety of levels. The focus questions deal with the following types of topics: parts of speech, punctuation, spelling and spelling patterns, capitalization, analyzing the writer’s craft, sentence structure, vocabulary, using context clues to find word meaning, denotative and connotative meaning of words, root words, prefixes and suffixes, figurative language, and more.
Each day contains a teacher answer-guide along with ideas for teaching points to coordinate with the daily mentor sentence and focus questions. It is the perfect way to teach grammar without having to lecture or do drill and kill worksheets to learn one isolated grammar concept at a time.
You will never see sentences the same, and your students will never see sentences the same. Sentence Stalking takes the sometimes intimidating, sometimes completely dry task of teaching about grammar and writing conventions and makes it into what is sure to be one of the best parts of your class period.
The resource includes three options for how to have students respond to the daily Sentence Stalking: a daily sheet that is filled out by students, a weekly sheet to save paper, or a presentation format so that students can use a notebook to record their answers each day. The presentation format is editable and also comes as a PDF.
The product also includes:
-A Sentence Stalking Start-Up Guide that will walk you through how to introduce Sentence Stalking to your students using the gradual release of responsibility.
-A Daily Sentence Stalking Structure with teacher language to show you what each day could look like.
-A model anchor chart with the daily Sentence Stalking structure.
-Differentiated options for Sentence Stalking to give you ideas on how to get every single student in your class engaged in this resource.
-A Sentence Stalking extension menu for early finishers and advanced students.
-Ten questions to prompt students to share out their thinking about Sentence Stalking with a partner or small group as part of the daily routine.
-A monthly scoring sheet
-A monthly reflection sheet
-A Sentence Stalking Student Guide that includes reference pages to help students answer the five daily focus questions. The different pages include figurative language, homophones, capitalization, commas, commonly misspelled/misused words, punctuation, types of sentences, parts of speech, prefixes/suffixes, Greek and Latin word roots, writer's craft, vocabulary, and a place to record other grammar takeaways.
Move away from traditional DOL or avoiding teaching grammar all together and move into this new way of having students look at mentor sentences from ten popular middle school books: Wonder, The Hunger Games, A Long Walk to Water, The Tiger Rising, Walk Two Moons, Tuck Everlasting, The Fault in Our Stars, Out of My Mind, Hatchet, and Counting by 7s. You will love what your students learn through this approach about grammar and how this learning transfers into students' writing.
