Syntax Song Lyric and Poetry Analysis Activities - Aligned with the Common Core State Standards for Reading, Language, and Writing
Are you unsure how to have your students analyze the structure of a poem in order to interpret how the word order and word choices affect the meaning and tone? It doesn't have to be difficult if you use this resource.
Students will engage in a fun group (or individual) activity using popular song lyrics before they tackle the harder analysis of the poems.
Step-by-step instructions and a detailed teacher's guide will walk you through the process. And your students will enjoy the activities while learning how to analyze syntax (the order and choices of words). (Can be used with your existing interactive notebook or as a stand-alone activity.)
Poems used for analysis (though you may use any poems you wish—the activity allows for easy customization):
"I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud" by William Wordsworth
"Yet Do I Marvel" by Countee Cullen
"Ode on a Grecian Urn" by John Keats
Includes the following materials:
- 20 song lyric activities (Hands-on activities that can be used in interactive notebooks)
- 2 handouts for analysis questions (in PDF and Word so you can share with your students)
- 3 poems for analysis
- Teacher's instructions (with images)
- Teacher's answer key
