This is an Honors English/Advanced English/Pre-AP English lesson that goes beyond the standards to analyze how sentence structure and syntax affect the readability of the text, propel the theme, and set the tone.
Students will break apart sentences and study the clauses and phrases that add depth and imagery to the text. They will practice sentence imitation, de-scramble sentences, and complete a graphic organizer to explain the effect the sentence has on the text.
There is also a writing prompt that has students use the sentence structures and techniques presented in the text to write their own narrative memoir.
This will challenge your advanced students and produce analytical discourse in the classroom.
