Description

This engaging review of sentence types (simple, compound, complex, and compound complex) will allow your students to work with mentor sentences in a hands-on format that will allow the grammar concept to sink in deeper.

HOW THIS LESSON WORKS:

  • There are two ways to use this lesson: as a paired activity or as a full-class activity. For the full-class method:
    • Students will each have a mentor sentence to consider
    • They will go to a corner of the room designated for that type of sentence (simple, compound, complex, or compound complex)
    • Students will look at each other's sentences and determine if all the sentences in the group are correct
    • Students will have a chance to move groups if they think their sentence belongs in a different group
    • Discussion handout and enrichment activity can follow the hands-on activity

  • For the paired activity
    • Students will work in pairs to separate a set of mentor sentences (about 10-12) into appropriate piles: simple sentences, compound sentences, complex sentences, and compound-complex sentences
    • Discussion handout and enrichment activity can follow the hands-on activity

HOW THIS LESSON ENGAGES YOUR STUDENTS:

  • High school students rarely get to do hands-on work with grammar, but they LOVE it (trust me on this).
  • By separating the sentences, they will naturally compare the sentences, thus bringing further understanding of the differences between types of sentences
