Sentence Helpers
SENTENCE WRITING FOR THE BEGINNING WRITER!
Sentence Helpers are a way to give emergent writers a chance to independently complete a sentence. They are designed to assist students in the early stages of forming sentences. The sentence "beginner" is always modeled as being capitalized and the sentence "ending" has a period. There is HEAVY repetition in the vocabulary used to reinforce common sight words which will ideally be carried over to more independent writing. Students have the assistance and modeling of words while at the same time can begin to make their own choices of words they want to use to form their sentence.

Slides 1-11 use prompts and model two words that can be copied.
Slides 12-17 one word modeled and student must choose the other two words.
Slides 18-22 verb is modeled and there are three-word sentences.
Slide 23-27 contain three boxes of words to choose.
Slides 28-31 are four boxes where the student must choose all words to complete a sentence.
PLEASE DOWNLOAD FREE PREVIEW FOR SAMPLE.
One way I have used this sentence writing activity is to color code the words. The student can use a colored marker to choose all of the words that will form one complete sentence. They can use a different color for each sentence.
Another possible option is to place the worksheets in page protectors for daily writing practice or morning work. As the student becomes more proficient they can move on to the next level.
Great for the special education/autism classroom!
