The Sentencing of Real-Life Cases is an engaging activity that allows students to be “judges” and determine the sentence of 5 different (real) criminal trials. The cases include Brock Turner (sexual assault), Ethan Couch (intoxication manslaughter), Martin Blake (prohibited sexual contact), Jonathan Magbie (Possession of Marijuana less than 2 oz) and Jesse Berben (Possession of Child Pornography).
Students will go through the facts of each case and determine the sentencing based on the evidence alone. Then, they will vote in their groups for exactly how long they should be punished for each crime. Last, each group will give their sentence and the teacher will share how long the person was sentenced in real life.
All sentencing guidelines and punishments are from the Texas Penal Code.
Included in this set are teacher instructions, student sheet, group voting sheet, Cards for each case that detail the evidence/facts, and a PowerPoint that gives information about the real-life case, including the sentences.
