About SNAPs Lab Stations Activities
SNAPs Lab Stations Activities require students to use science, math, literacy, problem-solving and engineering skills. They are designed to enhance students' understanding of scientific concepts and help students apply scientific ideas to the real world. Each station activity promotes skills so to develop students into proficient and competent scientific thinkers.

SNAPs lab activities have five components:
Science Skills Station to develop science skill proficiency
Narrative Station to build science literacy
Assessment Station to evaluate learning and understanding
Problem-Solving Station to foster engineering design
Synthesis/Summary Project to inspire higher-order learning

A description of the activities at each station in this particular lab is detailed below.

Next Generation Science Standards
This laboratory does not address a specific Next Generation Science Standard, but it complements concepts related to other NGSS. This lab combines the three dimensions of science learning - science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas and crosscutting concepts. This laboratory also makes interdisciplinary connections to STEM, Math CCSS and ELA CCSS to build the appropriate skills.

Separating Mixtures Lab Stations Activity Learning Objectives
1. Summarize separation techniques used to isolate components of a mixture.
2. Identify the physical properties that a technique manipulates so to separate a mixture into its components.
3. Demonstrate conservation of mass while separating components of a mixture.
4. Use physical separation techniques (mechanical separation, magnetism and filtration) to separate a mixture into its components.

Science Skills Station
Students will demonstrate physical separation techniques to isolate components of a mixture based on their size, state of matter and/or magnetism. Students will also evaluate the use of advanced separation techniques (crystallization, distillation, chromatography and centrifugation) to separate mixtures.

Narrative Station
Students will read an informational text about separating mixtures. They will also watch a video about the importance and usefulness of separation techniques in everyday life.

Assessment Station
At this station, students will answer questions about key terms and ideas relating to separating mixtures. Students will have to employ lower, mid and higher order thinking skills to answer these questions.

Problem-Solving Station
Students will be given a mixture of several substances. Students will use tools provided to separate the components of the mixture. Students will confirm mass was conserved while separating the mixture by comparing the mass of the mixture to the mass of the individual components after separating the mixture.

Synthesis/Summary Project
Students will have a choice of 11 projects. Suggestions for projects that are best suited for this particular lab are included. It is up to the teacher to control this portion of the lab, and thus, the higher-order skills utilized in this activity. Refer to the SNAPs Lab Stations Best Practices and Setup Guide for directions and suggestions on how to conduct the project.

2 Mesh Strainers
2 Magnets
2 Tweezers (optional)
2 Scales
