This lesson contains a complete guided reading worksheet with 61 questions (with answer key), 3 different crossword puzzles (with answer keys) and 3 different word searches (with answer keys) for the short story Separating by John Updike. Questions consist of True and False, multiple choice, fill in the blank and short answer.
This is an intense story about a husband and wife (The Maples) telling their children that they will be getting a separation and how each character deals with the agony of telling the children and dealing with the reality that the marriage is ending.

It will take about 65-95 minutes for the students to complete the 61 question worksheet (depending on the student).
Key vocabulary words from the story are used in the puzzles. The puzzles enhance student comprehension of lesson related vocabulary. Here is how I use the word search. When students find the correct word, I have them write the definition next to the word at the bottom of the list. Works great! (Master vocabulary list is found on the word search.)

As a public high school English teacher, the biggest challenge I have is getting students to read in class or at home. Put a book or short story in front of them, they'll look at it for a few seconds and start day dreaming...
Until I stumbled upon something magnificent. Teenagers like accomplishment. These worksheets ask questions while the reader reads. Every couple of sentences, there's another question in true or false, fill in the blank, define, multiple choice formats. As the student reads, boom, another question. They answer it and continue reading. Before you know it, they have finished reading the story and completed all questions for further lessons/discussions.
These worksheets are great for daily lessons, test/quiz grades, extra credit, homework, group work (in pairs of two), substitute teacher lessons, emergency lesson plans, great for ESOL or however you can imagine.
