This lesson includes materials for a close reading of the NYT op-ed "The War Against America: An Unfathomable Attack." This op-ed was written the day after Sept. 11, 2001 by a native New Yorker. It is recommended for high school students, most likely at an honors level. I currently use it in my pre-AP 9th grade classes. I teach it over 2 45-minute periods with time for discussion.
Materials for this lesson include:
1. anticipatory vocab to help students comprehend the op-ed's higher lexile;
2. the op-ed text with margin space for close reading and annotations;
3. a 4-question literary analysis quiz and teacher's key (this can be done independently or whole class depending on students' ability and comfort with question types)
4. a double-entry journal for reflection on the author's style and craft
