September 11, 2001 was a day that changed America forever. It was actually my first year in the classroom and now that more than a decade has passed, I find that my students know very little about that tragic day. Since it is such a sensitive topic, I approach it from an angle where the students do small investigations and then report their findings.
For this activity I will either assign a single “Time Page” to a small group or all the “Time Pages” to each individual student. Depending on the age and research experience of your students, you may want to compile a list of websites that you want them to use. The students will find information about the particular times on 9/11, report what occurred, draw an illustration and then write their personal feelings about the event. The times may differ a bit from site to site.
After the individuals or groups finish the Time Pages they can be turned into a booklet and then reported to the class.
