This download includes both the 22-slide PowerPoint and a comic strip template to hand out (in PDF and MS WORD format). Students follow along with the PowerPoint, reading about steps in the story of 9/11 and create comic strips with titles, visuals, and captions.
This activity is designed to guide students who are at least in the 4th or 5th grade, but it would be ideal for middle or high school. It could be adjusted for younger students if needed. The lesson could take anywhere from 30 minutes to 60 minutes, depending on how long you want to spend in discussion or in having students create visuals.
Students are encouraged to use ten key terms as they go (1 Jihad, 2 World Trade Center, 3 Terrorist, 4 George W Bush, 5 Osama Bin Laden, 6 Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, 7 United States, 8 Flight 93, 9 Pentagon, 10 White House).
By the end, each student will have 8 boxes representing the following steps in the story of the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001:
1 Jihad on the West
2 Plot to hijack planes
3 An Attack on the WTC
4 An Attack on the Pentagon
5 Flight 93 Goes Down in a Field
6 Both Towers Collapse in New York
7 Planes are Grounded Across America
8 A War on Terror; Afghan and Iraq Wars
This activity was created as an alternative to my comprehensive September 11th PowerPoint found here:
