This lesson is geared towards the Middle School and High School-aged student. There is a PPT and corresponding Student Packets that takes students through the entire lesson. The lesson i constructed in Do Now, Direct Instruction, Guided and Independent practice Format.
Students are provided background information on the events of the day. They will be taking guided notes that highlight the most important material from the PPT.
Students then will exam first hand accounts from people who witnessed the tragedy in NYC. The first account is from an employee in one of the towers. The teacher will integrate literacy into the lesson at this point by practicing metacognitive skills in order to empathize with those who were immediately affected by the attack. The next account is from a NYC firefighter who was able to escape the harrowing catastrophe and explain his experience. In order to demonstrate their metacognitive abilities, students will be asked to take portions, or a sentence, form these excerpts and explain how this made them think and feel.
