Prior to reading a Patriot Day or September 11th related text, activate prior knowledge and build background by using the KWL chart. Have students share out what they know and want to know about 9/11. You may chart these on board or chart paper. Students can then copy text into the columns.
You can also use the word cards to activate prior knowledge by displaying them and taking the time to talk about the meaning of each word. Leave words on display for student reference.
After reading aloud a Patriot Day or September 11th related text you can have the students complete the Venn Diagram where they'll have the opportunity to compare and contrast a police officer and firefighter. You can do this in small groups, whole group, or independently.
