At this point, I had several students sit during "The Pledge of Allegiance" stating it was their right to do so. I had a hard time with this due to knowing several people who gave their lives for these students to have this right. Later on, I had a couple other students talking about 9/11 and the impact it had on us as US citizens. And after that discussion, I decided to have a teaching moment about respect. In all my classes, we discussed what respect looks like...respect to ourselves, respect to others, respect to our community, and respect to our country. Students then wrote down what respect means to them and together we created a US Flag. It was very powerful and I even had students years later talk about this activity.
