I made these PowerPoints to go along with the Rooted in Reading literacy unit sold on TPT. I used it with a co-teacher at my last school and it was my everything! If you've purchased it, prepare to fall in love! My student's ALL met and exceeded their reading goals and I blame it all on RIR! Now, for the vocabulary - I created a PowerPoint for each story. I just needed to have the vocabulary explicitly taught. This is the month of September but coming soon will be a full year bundle.
How I use them:
The way I do it, is the vocabulary words come up on the screen (there's a little drumroll) and the students read them as they pop up. Then, we make inferences about what each word means (I usually take one or two guesses. On the next few slides, we try to match up the definition with the word (word bank included). Once we get through them all - there a matching game where you choose the word that most closely matches the vocab word. Then, the PowerPoint ends and it claps for you. :) It took all of about 10 minutes. We did this BEFORE we read the book for the first time and students would give me a thumbs up when they heard the word read aloud. It's very helpful and effective! I hope you love them! Using explicit lessons for vocabulary really gets those words rooted into your students minds so that they start looking for the words in context. I hope these are helpful in your reading lessons!!
Stories included in the bundle:
When I was Young in the Mountains
The Salamander Room
Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge
A Visitor for Bear
