Please note that this is an UPDATED (as of 8/20/14) pack.

Differentiated Centers

This pack was created to support independent activities for the math block. This pack contains eleven different activities, eight of which are differentiated. However, counted individually, this pack has twenty-three activities.

Teachers can use the skills to differentiate for students by difficulty level, or can have students complete all levels of the task, so the centers last for several weeks and scaffold upon themselves. The centers could also be used for differentiation in guided math groups. All activities include a recording sheet for student accountability. The cover sheets and directions are available in color or black and white. All the center pieces are in black in white to save printing costs.

Please note that some activities require additional materials such as dry erase markers, crayons, or centimeter rulers.

Centers Included in this Pack:

-Glowing with Evens and Odds- Students sort cards with numbers into even and odd. This is a differentiated activity with two levels. In the first version, the cards contain the number only and students can use manipulatives, or the included counters, to build the number and decide if it is even or odd. In the second version, students sort cards with the number and the actual number of fireflies on the cards. Students can use a dry erase marker to find and circle the pairs on the laminated card.

-Football Bonds- Students draw a card and solve to find the missing number in the number bond. There are two versions of this activity. The first version includes numbers to ten. The second version includes numbers to twenty.

-Fact Family School Houses- Students draw a card and solve to find the fact family of the three numbers on the card. There are two versions of this activity. The first version includes fact families to ten. The second version includes fact families to twenty.

-Falling into Math Facts- Students sort cards to determine if the number sentence on the card is true or false. This is a differentiated activity with five levels. In the first version, the cards contain addition facts to ten. The second version includes addition facts to twenty. The third version includes subtraction facts to ten. The fourth version includes subtraction facts to twenty. The last version includes mixed addition and subtraction facts to twenty.

-Raking in Riddles- Students practice using a hundreds chart to find the number before and after a given number, and ten more and ten less than a given number, to create a hidden picture. There are two versions of this activity included. In the first version, students practice before and after. In the second version, students practice ten more and ten less.

-Skipping through Fall- Students draw a card and solve to find the missing number in the pattern. There are two versions of this activity included. In the first version, students skip count using benchmark numbers. In the second version, students skip count with and without benchmark numbers.

-Popping Along the Pumpkin Patch- Students draw a hundreds chart card with a pattern marked. Then, the students solve to find the missing numbers and what the pattern is skip counting by. This activity is not differentiated.

-Pumpkin Pie Place Value- Students build a given number in expanded form, using cards with pumpkin seeds. Two versions of this activity are included. The first version includes expanded form to 100, and the second version includes standard form to 1,000.

-Word Problem Wizard- Students draw a card with a word problem and solve. There are three versions of this activity: two digit addition without regrouping, two digit addition with regrouping, and two digit addition with and without regrouping.

-Measuring Mr. S. Crow- Students draw a card and measure the scarecrow, on the card to the nearest centimeter. This activity is differentiated by directions. Students can either use a centimeter ruler to measure or can use a ones cube from base ten blocks. A ones cube is exactly one centimeter!

-Great Fall Graphing- Students draw cards and count the total number of objects on the cards. Then, students create a bar graph with the information and answer questions using the bar graph. This activity is not differentiated.

Teacher’s Helpers

This is an additional pack of teacher’s helpers to make your math block as smooth as possible! Included in this file is:

*Center Icons for Rotations or Bin Labels-These are square labels that match each of the centers’ cover sheets. These are perfect for center rotations or for labeling bins.

*Center/ Work Stations Menu or Cover Sheet-I created this sheet for students to check off as they complete the center/work station each day. They can also be used as a daily or weekly reflection piece for students.

*Students Reflection Rubric-At the end of the week, students have a simple rubric to complete that allows them to reflect on their effort and understanding.

*Simple Grading Sheet-This is a simple sheet for teachers to staple to the top of all of one student’s centers. There is a checklist of all the centers and teachers can score all of the centers for one student. There are four check lists to a sheet.

*Teacher Check Sheet-Editable checklist to mark off if students have turned in all the centers in this pack.
