Students will practice sequencing and describing 3-step story pictures.

Are you looking for a student-friendly way to reinforce sequencing?

Sequencing is a critical literacy skill that taps into students’ ability to organize information and make sense of what they read. English Language Learners, emergent readers, and early readers all benefit from repeated practice with sequencing real-life events, a skill that will help them tackle complex texts later in life.

This hands-on resource gives students a fun opportunity to arrange a series of picture cards into 3 sequential steps. (There are 8 different picture stories in all.)

Each story comes in 4 versions, allowing for easy differentiation:

  • Students cut the three picture cards and determine the logical order in which they occur, gluing them in the proper spaces.

  • Students cut the three picture cards and determine the logical order in which they occur, gluing them in the proper spaces. They then write sentences explaining what happened using the transition words, “First,” “Then,” and “Last.”

  • Students cut the three picture cards and determine the logical order in which they occur, gluing them in the proper spaces. They then write sentences explaining what happened using the transition words, “First,” “Second,” and “Third.”

  • Students cut the three picture cards and determine the logical order in which they occur, gluing them in the proper spaces. They then write sentences explaining what happened using their own words.

Finally, students orally explain what happened in the picture cards and/or read their writing to a partner. This increases students’ oral and receptive language skills.

This resource fits perfectly as part of a Reading Workshop unit on story structure, during Writing Workshop (i.e. How-To writing), or as independent work in centers!
