This has been a game-changing tool in my classroom. The beginning of first and second grade can be overwhelming with how little students are able to write. But this tool has helped me students visualize writing in 3 parts. We first start with "When I wake up in the morning, I first..." and they draw a picture of the first thing they do in the morning before school. Then the next sentence starts with "Next,..." and then they write what they do (I brainstorm possible words they might need on an anchor chart so they have a reference for some words, but otherwise I tell them not to worry about spelling- I just want their creative juices flowing!) The last sentence starts with, "Last,..." Even my most struggling writers are able to begin articulating their thinking in words.
