This animated PowerPoint provides a game to practice the conjugation of the verb ser
while assessing students’ understanding, oral skills, and ability to accurately use the ser
. Due to the interactive nature of the PowerPoint, it can be used as a team competition, individually to improve or assess skills, or as a self-checking written assessment.
Although this PowerPoint can be used in many different ways, the initial use of this game was as a team competition using Whiteboards. I envision students taking turns orally giving a number in Spanish, which provides a review and quick way to assess a working knowledge of numbers as well as pronunciation. The board uses animation to track progress through the game board. As you click on the green numbered squares, it links to a slide with a subject followed by a blank and a word or phrase to form a complete sentence as it is better for students to see the verb being used rather in isolation. Students would determine the correct form of ser
to complete the sentence either orally or in writing if the teacher chooses to do it that way, perhaps using a team whiteboard that is held up when the answer is written. Clicking on the slide reveals the English subject pronoun and form of ser
. Proceeding through the PowerPoint by clicking reveals a short explanation of the form. For oral practice, students are required to read the complete sentence out loud individually, as teams, groups, or as a class. Ask students to create an original sentence using the same form of the verb ser
or suggest a new subject for the sentence and see if they can change the verb to agree. Before clicking a final time, encourage students to translate the sentence. Then click to reveal the English translation. After looking at the translation, click on the home icon to return to the main game board. The number of the slide just completed will disappear and a flag of Mexico will be gradually, which I used as a lead into a cultural unit on Mexico. Although it is not permissible to copy and send the PowerPoint home with students, the PowerPoint could be available to students on a school computer or as a center for students who need extra practice.
The PowerPoint begins with the game board. Each square on the main game board is linked to one of 25 slides. A series of clicks reveals the correct form of the verb ser
, the English equivalent of the pronoun used, the person and number of the pronoun, and an English translation. In total, there are 26 working slides plus a final slides that provides links to my store.
