We Spanish teachers know the difficulty of teaching the differences between ser and estar!
I have used the game of "Mafia" as a review game for La Hora (Time)
and for Por vs. Para
So, I decided that it was time to add in a little fun to all of the confusion that typically happens with teaching ser and estar.
In this game, the mafia, detective, and townspeople must correctly determine whether to use a conjugation of SER or ESTAR in Spanish (on the powerpoint) in order to be able to kill, convict, or lynch. This is an interesting twist on a fun game that the students already love to play!
This definitely works better with smaller classes, as it is very involved and requires a lot of steps. It can still work with larger classes, but just know that it may take a little longer.
- Teacher Instructions
- Signs of the conjugations of SER and ESTAR that the students could hold up/point to on their desks to indicate the correct answer
- Role sheets - ciudadano (townsperson), mafia, y policía
- El Trabajo de los Muertos (worksheet with 13 questions & T-charts about ser and estar for "dead" students to work on until the next round) & answer key
- Powerpoint with 21 questions & answers for the game
