This class activity/assignment is a great anticipatory set to start your Serial Podcast unit. It provides students with a solid foundation to NPR's Serial podcast (Season One: Adnan Syed & Hae Min Lee). I find this lesson takes at least three days: One day to present the assignment to the class and have them research and plan their work. The following day to present to the class. Then, usually one or two days later, I administer the accompanying two-page quiz to my students to ensure they have anchored their learning of these vocabulary words.
- 37 PowerPoint Slides
- Two-page PDF Quiz (with Answer Key)
- One-page PDF "PowerPoint Oral Presentation Rubric"
Over the course of 37 slides, students will learn the focal vocabulary of Serial. (I've taught Serial a half-dozen times, and what I found when I first started teaching is that students were hooked with the narrative, but they lacked the understanding of words to get deeper level meaning and be able to write about what they were listening and thinking about.)
Students will pair up and research a vocabulary word from the list provided. After researching the word, students will create a PowerPoint slide with an image, to present to the class.
To ensure learning takes place, and the audience remains focused, I always quiz my students two days after the presentation with the meanings of the words. (The quiz and answer key I use is also included in PDF-format.) With that, they are ready to break into Serial: Season One.
The vocabulary words used are: Mosque, Adamant, Staunch, Tangible, Alibi, Confide, Affidavit, Undermine, Discredit, Bloodhound, Trawl, Diligence, Heinous, Demeanour, Elation
