My students love listening to the Serial podcast, and yours will too! Listening to and discussing a podcast is a fun, engaging way to get students to analyze a text. This unit covers multiple CCSS in Speaking and Listening, as well as Language and Writing standards.
I like to use this unit in my classroom as part of a larger Public Speaking Unit. We discuss each episode together as a class in order to get students used to the idea of public speaking, and then end the unit with a group speech presentation before they give individual speeches. This unit can also stand alone.
- A discussion chart to monitor and grade student involvement in class discussions of the podcast
- Case notes for each episode for students to take their own notes, jot down questions, form theories, etc.
-Evidence handouts based on the Serial podcast website
-A culminating group speech project using textual evidence and note taking to form a consensus on guilt or innocence of the protagonist
-A rubric for the speech project
-A major character notes chart to help keep all characters straight
- A google Slide presentation for introductory material
Allow your students to analyze the podcast and play detective while preparing them for public speaking!
