This is a fun an engaging way to kick off your Serial: Season One podcast unit.
Included herein is a 22-slide PowerPoint and a 1-page accompanying worksheet.
In order to empathize with what it may have been like for Adnan to recall and reconstruct a day that happened a few weeks ago, student will engage in MEMORY RECAL ACTIVITY that can be shared with the class, that will make real for them how difficult detailed memory recall can be. This will build empathy for Adnan's situation (as well as any of the other witnesses).
Students will then play a PARLOUR GAME ACTIVITY, as a class, which will put their quick recall to the test.
Finally, students will practice their POWERS OF OBSERVATION in TWO VIDEO-BASED ACTIVITIES which always stimulate same excited class discussion. (The videos are freely available on YouTube by following these links:
Overall, this one-to-two day lesson really sparks my students' imaginations, not only for the Podcast, but more importantly, to understand and be a bit more sympathetic to the predicament that Adnan Syed was in, in terms of helping the police with their investigation.
I hope you and your students will find this as fun and engaging an entrance into the Podcast as my students do.
