Product Description

This writing assignment is based on Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events series, an increasingly popular read among students and excellent texts for novel studies.

This assignment asks students to analyze the purpose and style behind Lemony Snicket's "letter to the editor", included at the end of each novel. These "letters" provide foreshadowing for the upcoming novel, are written in a specific stylistic fashion (including unique stationery and imagery), and reinforce series synchronicity.

Students must use their knowledge of these skills to create their own fictional "letter to the editor", in essence creating a brief stylized narrative that eludes to a fictional story of their own, requires writing in the first person, and must be written using a distinct author's voice.

This is an excellent formative assessment or writing piece that can be used at any point throughout the series, although it will be more impactful once students have read the "letter to the editor"s from at least books one and two.
