Math Extensions allow students to play an active role in their learning. The activities in this resource can be used to introduce or practice the Georgia Standards of Excellence:
MGSE1.OA.1 Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Serving Up Word Problems includes three types of word problems:
Each type of word problem includes three levels. Level 1 provides addition activities within 5. Level 2 provides addition activities within 12. Level 3 provides addition activities within 20. Students can practice each level using the 8 task cards and manipulatives (e.g., 5 frame mat, 10 frame mats, Part-Part-Whole mat). The teacher can administer the corresponding response sheet for a formative assessment.
