My "Star Books" are easy readers designed to help kindergartners practice reading and writing high frequency words. As you know, when high frequency words are instantly recognized, a student’s short term memory is not overloaded, and is free to comprehend what is going on in a story. At our school we call kindergarten high frequency words, “Star Words”. Each week we focus on a new Star Word. These easy readers help students practice the Star Word of the week, while building on the words we learned in previous weeks. These books are great for preschool, kindergarten, and even ELD students.
This is a set of 10 books. Each book focuses on a different sight word, building on sight words learned in previous books. Students can trace the dotted words/sentences, highlight the focus word with a yellow crayon, and color the cute pictures. To assemble each book, just cut book in half, put second half under first, and staple. Students love to read these books to their parents, siblings, pets, and stuffed animals.
Also included, is a list of the kindergarten high frequency word list that I use in my classroom. I send a copy home for students to practice with their parents and use one for testing students on sight word recognition at school. I have also included a copy of my first homework assignment of the year- to make a special book treasure box. Feel free to use it if you like. I then make two copies of each book. Each week, we add one book to their classroom reading boxes and send one home to put in their book treasure box. For homework each night, students are asked to read books from their treasure boxes to their parents, siblings, pets, stuffed animals, and anyone who will listen.
Hope you and your students enjoy these easy readers! Be on the look out for books 11-25 (coming soon)!
