40 story starters based on 10 photos to help students improve their attention to details in writing: setting, characters and events.
Students are directed to “write an exciting story with danger and escape. Give your characters personality in what they say and do. Describe your setting with details and imagery. Make your events come alive with action and drama.”
Students view and discuss a wildlife photo (taken by me on local trails) before writing: a rabbit on a trail, a hummingbird on a branch, a butterfly on a flower, a dragonfly on a yucca leaf, a male mallard on a lake, a small pond with reeds, a series of steps on a trail, a mountain goat on a cliff, desert cacti and a rock, and a Joshua tree bending over a trail.
Perfect for whole-class narrative writing or a literacy center, for Gifted writers or early finishers. Take a look at the Preview to see a few sample pages.
