Whether you are just starting the year and setting the tone, or you have made it through half the year and realize you need a revamp. The lesson contains a lesson guide. On the left of the lesson guide it includes the lesson objective, lesson materials, and things to consider when preparing for the lesson. On the right of the lesson guide, there are step by step directions for leading the lesson. There are optional extensions with hands on, interactive activities to support the process at the end of the lesson guide.
You have the option of using the interactive notebook size handouts or a full sized handout for use in a binder system. The lesson includes materials for a blank handout and an example handout. You can use the example as a spring board for your own classroom discussion, or you can use it as the handout for students. It is important to include students in generating ideas so that they have ownership of the expectations, however, whenever, I do these lessons I end up with very similar examples as the ones I have included.
Depending on how long you wish to take on discussions and on the optional activities, the pacing of these lessons are supposed to take 30 minutes to 60 minutes. It could take up to two periods, depending on the length of time you wish to dedicate to this lesson.
Grade Level: This unit is designed with middle level students who qualify for Social Skills in mind, however, I am sure it can be adapted for upper elementary and high school students needing intervention.
