This is a set of thirty task cards for practicing the story element of setting. Students use close reading and look for text based evidence to determine details of a story's setting. A good variety of activities makes these cards appealing to students and allows them to really understand the concept of setting and see how it adds to a story.

Here are some of the activities included:

- identify the time, place, and duration from a passage

- list the clues to setting in a passage

- write a story based on a pictured setting

- answer setting questions

- recall stories read with particular types of settings

- infer the time and place from an image

- find settings on a map

- complete a setting chart

- identify the setting in news articles

All three elements of setting are addressed - place, time, and duration. Also, both fiction and non-fiction examples are included to give students practice using setting information to enhance reading comprehension with various types of readings.

These cards are a large, half-page size with more content per card than many smaller task cards as well as illustrations designed for middle school and upper elementary kids. The variety of activities makes them perfect for differentiating with students of different abilities and students who work at different rates. The cards work well for individual or group work, and for review activities, class games like Scoot or Footloose, or quick assessments.

Included with this set is a blank answer sheet for students to fill in their answers.

Also included is a list of suggestions for ways to use task cards and a list of suggestions for easy differentiation with task cards.

Delving into one story elements such as setting is a great way to help students develop their reading comprehension as well as their own writing skills. The cards support the Reading Anchor Standards and the Reading: Literature Standards.

The Easel Activity is a digital version that is ready to use with one card per slide. It is ready for student use with answer boxes and directions already in place.
